Be Thinking and Doodling

Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. (Philippians 4:8 NLT)

During Ant Kamp, we establish a morning routine. Eat breakfast together. Stay in pajamas. Gather together for Heart Room time.

This year we adopted two creative ways to engage in prayer: doodling and writing.

This week, we focused on using new words and pictures to pray to God. It’s fun to watch kids engaging in prayer in fresh ways. After our devotion time, they each go to a special part of the house or yard by themselves to meet with Jesus in their heart room.

We tried a technique from Sybil MacBeth’s Praying in Color Kids’ Edition. We drew a shape in the middle of the page, then webbed three or four other shapes from the center.

In the center shape, I encouraged them to write a characteristic or action of God and then add names of people in their life that they wanted to experience God. Below is my colorful prayer for each child to experience God as the Good Shepherd.

Some of the ideas the kids prayed over were God’s plans and God’s dreams for each person they wanted to pray for, which included themselves!

What a joy to be sharing the creative ways that I enjoy meeting with God.

The other book that we find journal prompts has been Rachel Hackenberg’s Writing to God Kids’ Edition. We compared God to our favorite color and types of weather.

Both of these books have been published first in adult editions, which I have used in expressing my heart to God. I highly reccomend both the kids and adult versions.

What creative way is God inviting you to interact with Him?

  1. Kel, I love this idea………..I am at the edge of the shore looking at the tip of the iceberg called ‘creativity’ and I know God wants me to take a closer look. What a great gift you’ve given da nieces and da nephews!

    1. Jody-I am in awe of all the creativity God has opened to us…I dare you to take that closer look…by doing so my perspective has enlarged greatly! Living out of His abundance allows me to share with whoever God brings along…I never imagined that my nieces and nephews would someday really be my neighbors! God is awesome like that!

  2. Love those books! I have not bought the first one mentioned but perused it thoroughly at the bookstore! Of course Rachel H. is a blessing- love her stuff! Happy SUmmer! By the way- who won the journal?

    1. Praying with color and words combined is the best practice I’ve found to jumpstart my prayer life when it’s waning. The winner of the journal and book was Joanne Viola!

I love a dialogue. Be the first to start a discussion!
